Sonic Soup For The Soul 2-17-14: Disclosure – “Latch” and “White Noise”

Someone once asked me “Norris, how is it that you listen to so much electronic music”? I replied, with a funny face, and said “I’m from Detroit, house music is in my blood”.

That’s why Settle from UK brother duo, Disclosure, is stuck in my rotation this week. I love the fact that it hearkens back to the heyday of house and electronica in the 90s. Just about everything in this album is straight forward techno/house but what makes it so good is it’s got that English smooth to it. The album never tries too hard to convince you that this music is good. “Latch” is early on in the album but is a standout track amongst the more tradition dance fare of the rest of the album. It’s a jam I been finding myself singing in my down time and I hope it impacts you as well. Sam Smith’s vocals put me in a absolute trance during the hook.

Also, the groups more housey track of my week is “White Noise” which completely takes me back to 1998 and waiting up at night with my cousin Bree and her friends for the mixes that came on WJLB after 10, albeit with a bit less vulgarity. The also get a HUGE big up from me for acknowledging that music tradition through the video. Check it out.
