World Cup Day 4 and 5: Soccer Bliss

I’m combining these two days from the simple fact that outside of a few flashes of excitement the Iran/Nigeria match was absurdly boring. Messi scored against a scrappy Bosnian side which is what he is supposed to do. And the Swiss scored in the last minute against Ecuador which for all intents and purposes was a fairly even affair outside of that last possession.

Haris Seferovic as the embodiment of “the turn up” after his game winner against Ecuador.

Monday, however, saw an amazing display of football from the Germans who proved to a lackluster Portugal that they just might be the team to beat in the Cup above both Brazil and Spain. Germany dominated Ronaldo and Co. on the way to their 4-0 win, with a hat trick from forward Thomas Muller.

The only thing more pleasing than Suarez tears are Ronaldo tears.

Even more shocking than the scoreline was Portugal’s total implosion from start to finish. Injuries to vital forward Hugo Almeida and defender Fabio Coentrao have made Portugal’s chances to make it out of the Group of Death that much harder. Plus Pepe decided to be Pepe in the worst possible moment and got a red card and sent off halfway through the first half and forced Portugal to play a man down for majority of the match. Ronaldo cried more and traded shirts with his German Real Madrid teammate Sami Khediera at halftime because even he knew the watch was long over.

“I told you we don’t like paddle shifters on our E-Class”

The main event of the day Ghana vs. USA was nothing like the German blowout, in fact it proved to be some of the most compelling football we have seen so far. The rivalry between these two sides goes back eight years and Ghanaens like Kevin-Prince Boateng and Asamoah Gyan are near villain status among soccer fans in the States. But when the game began the USA made a quick and powerful statement through captain Clint Dempsey who scored thirty seconds into the match making it the fifth fastest goal in World Cup history. The game wouldn’t stay positive for the USA, however, as striker Josy Alditore left early in the first half with what seemed to be a strained hamstring. Dempsey would take a shin to the face and bleed his own blood onto the pitch Defender Matt Besler would be subbed out at half time.

Dempsey went Super Saiyan 3 at the start of the match against Ghana

Ghana dominated the possession of the second half with great balls in to Gyan and an equalizing goal from Andre Ayew made it seem like the Black Stars would mount a come back and break the US’s hearts one again. But Jurgen Klinsmann’s substitutions proved to be vital again. Team USA neophyte John Brooks checked in for Besler at the half to bolster the defense with his size  and Graham Zusi half way through the second half  to create from the midfield. The result was electrifying. Four minutes after Ghana equalized, the US win a corner and Zusi delivers a perfect ball from which Brooks buried a powerful bouncing header uptting the US up 2-1.

Pure joy…

Man Of The Day: Thomas Muller

Muller

As much as I want to give the award to Brooks, it absolutely MUST go to Thomas Muller for not just the hat trick but also his domination over the back line of Portugal his mental victory over Pepe, Hats off (but watch for mild headbutts).

EDIT: Karim Benzema scored a buncha goals for France as well as a result here is a picture of  Zahia Denar
